First Step to Become an Anesthesiologist

This test you will have to take before entering a medical school. This exam is called MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). It will assess your ability to perceive scientific information and some skills important for future anesthesiologists. After successful passing you will be eligible for entering a medical school and pursuing a graduate degree.

How to Become an Anesthesiologist?

To start practicing you have to pass the test administered by the American Board of Anesthesiology. You can take this examination at one of the Pearson Vue Testing Centers across the country. Actually, this exam consists of two parts.

First part of the exam will evaluate your knowledge in anatomy, pharmacology, anesthesia procedures, clinical sciences, anesthesia in obstetrics and pediatrics. The test includes two sections, 2 hours 20 minutes are given for each part. All in all, you will have to answer 250 multiple-choice questions.

If you successfully pass the first part of the exam, you can apply for the Part Two. This test will evaluate your communication and practical skills. The examination takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina. You will get 2 clinical cases. Next, you will have to explain your actions in each situation to the examination board. The test lasts 35 minutes.

How to Become an Anesthesiologist of a Certain Specialty

If you want to become an anesthesiologist in some special field, be ready for one more examination. Those students who choose to specialize in pain medicine, critical care, pediatric anesthesiology etc., will take an additional test to be allowed to practice in one of those specific areas.
